I can not believe it’s already been a year since I wrote the initial blog post about our Amber Chestnut Pergo Flooring. (You can see the original post, here!) Since writing that post, I’ve gotten tons of questions about how it has held up. I wanted to take the time to answer some frequently asked questions. While I’m at it, I’ll give you guys a one year Pergo flooring review.
For starters, the photos in this blog post are not edited. They were taken with my iPhone and were not altered in any way. I hope this helps in your decision making!
Q: How does the floor hold up with kids, pets, furniture moving etc.?
A: Although we don’t have kids in our home, we do have a 90 pound puppy that has given these Pergo floors a run for their money. We got Oakley about a month after our flooring was installed (some called us crazy…..maybe we were!?) and I can honestly say that we do not have a single scratch, dent or mark on them. That’s saying a lot since we went through the entire puppy stage with lots of running from room to room at full speed and nails sliding across them. Pet approved.
Q: Have you had any issues with water/spills?
A: Nope. We’ve spilled water/liquids on our flooring quite a few times and have never noticed an issue. Also, our dog drinks his water like a maniac and is constantly getting it all over our kitchen floor. I’ve never worried about it or felt like I needed to wipe it up right away (if I’m being honest….I usually let it go haha!)
Q: Does your flooring feel moveable at different times or make that “clicking” sound as you walk across it?
A: No, ours does not. We used the recommend padding under our floors so this was helpful in preventing that stereotypical “clicking” sound. I should also add that this flooring is on the higher end quality-wise for laminate flooring. Also keep in mind, we live in a brand new home. Our sub-floor isn’t quite as worn in as older homes where there may be gaps between the sub-flooring and laminate.
Q: Exactly what is the name of your flooring?
A: Our flooring is Pergo MAX Premier Amber Chestnut 7.48-in W x 4.52-ft L Embossed Wood Plank Laminate Flooring.
Q: Where can I buy it and how much does it cost?
A: We purchased ours from our local Lowe’s and it cost $2.58/sq ft.
Q: Was it difficult to install?
A: My husband and dad installed the Pergo on the main level of our home. We were able to save some money doing it ourselves. It took them about 4-5 days to complete. My dad actually used to build homes so I would say he is more skilled than most when it comes to things like this, but they both agree that it wasn’t terribly difficult once you got started.
Overall, we’re super impressed with the quality and durability of this flooring. We’re really glad we spent a bit more money on higher-end laminate! I hope this Pergo flooring review was helpful & let me know if you have any more questions about our flooring in the comments below.

My husband and i were looking to put this exact flooring in our house. was worried because of the reviews i’ve read. did you find any bad pieces like you couldn’t use at all. right now i have engineered hardwood and all i see are scratches and water marks, footprints from us and the dogs. this looks like an awesome choice. and also what do you use to clean your floors.
thank you
carole
sarah jane says
Hi Carole! We didn’t have any pieces that were bad/un-useable. We typically vacuum first and then use our shark mop steamer or swiffer. No issues yet 🙂
Brittany says
I have purchased this exact flooring because of your original post and pictures so thank you 🙂 I can’t express how much I am in love with them! I do have a question… how do you clean them?! Sweep or vacuum? And do you recommend a mop or swiffer for routine deep cleaning?
sarah jane says
You are so welcome!! We vacuum all the time & use swifters often 😊 That’s what I found works best!

Came across your blog on Pinterest and I’m glad I did! I love these floors and will be installing them in my living area, but the water resistant kind, which is a newer product I believe. Anyway, I Just wanted to know what kind of paint you used in your entryway and in your living room and your bedroom? Thank you very much 🙂 it has money in it
sarah jane says
Thank you so much for stopping by my blog! We used “Ivory Lace” by sherwin williams in our entryway and “Pearly White” in our bedroom/living room. I hope this helps!

Hi,
I’m planning on installing these floors in my upstairs, but I hate the recommended transition strips. I noticed your threshold doesn’t have any, and isn’t cupping at all. Did you install greater than 40 linear feet without transitions? Thanks in advance.
sarah jane says
Hi Christina! Yes we did. We didn’t use transition strips in our home for this flooring. Hope this helps!

Hi. I was looking at this laminate but I’m really nervous to purchase it. My current laminate is terrible and only stays clean for a few minutes and then has footprints on it as soon as someone walks on it. I’ve tried cleaning it with different cleaners with no success. How does your Pergo floor hold up to dirt? How often do you have to sweep/mop? Thank you for posting this review. It was very helpful.
sarah jane says
Hi Michelle!
This is a higher-end laminate so unless our shoes are muddy (or our puppy has muddy paw prints) it’s pretty hard to see footprint tracking on the floor. This laminate has more of a “matte” finish as opposed to lower-end laminate that his a highly reflective aspect. We mop using a steamer about once a week. I hope this helps & let me know if you have any more questions 🙂

Did you have to silicon around the entire perimeter of the floor, and then add quarter round,or did you just add baseboard after the flooring was installed? Is the silicon and quarter round required only in wet places”bathroom , kitchen”, but not essential in dry places” living room, hallways. Thank you
sarah jane says
We just added the baseboard after the flooring was installed. I hope this helps. We don’t have this flooring in any of our bathrooms so I can’t speak on what would be appropriate for them. I hope this helps!

I bought these floors after seeing them in your house, but I’m having trouble finding a fan to match!
Any advice? Or could you tell me which fan is in your living room?
Thanks in Advance
sarah jane says
Hi Jess!
Here is the link for the ceiling fans that we have in the bedrooms and living room of our house. Super affordable & goes well with the flooring. Hope this helps 🙂

hi!
Lovely floors! Just what I am looking for with pets. Thank you for the review.
One thing we do to corral our messy cat kibble and spills is use the interior floor of a dog crate as the feeding/water tray. It catches the water, especially during zoomies. You can buy the dog crate plastic liner at PetCo for sure. Not sure about PetSmart, but I have to imagine you can.
sarah jane says
Good idea! Thanks so much for sharing that with me today
HK says
Hi again,
I totally forgot to ask – how did you decide to run your planks? Is there a specific way you would recommend? I think I know what we need to do, but I always want to hear others thoughts on how and why. Thank you!!
sarah jane says
We just installed these in a total random order! We tried our best not to have any two of the same board pattern side by side but we didn’t think much of it other than that…we probably would’ve drove ourselves crazy if we did. We haven’t noticed duplicated patterns at all 🙂
joan says
I love this flooring but it is not available in Canada. Any other ideas of anything similar to this by chance you were looking at!?
sarah jane says
There are lots of pretty options on Wayfair!

Hi this is extremely helpful! We just purchased the same wood for our entire downstairs. Are you still happy with your purchase?
sarah jane says
Hi there! Yes we’re still very pleased with our choice 🙂
RJ says
Thank you. A good review that helped me. I’m 78 and live alone. I use a walker so taking out the carpet and having Lowe’s install will make it easier.
sarah jane says
I am so glad that it helped! Best of luck with the new flooring
Kelsey says
Hello!
We have these exact floors and also love them! We’re having a mantel built and some floating shelves and am wondering what stain you think would be best to match? Early American, Provincial or Special Walnut?
Thank you so much! 🙂
Kelsey
sarah jane says
Here is a stain mixture that we used that matches the flooring really well!

Hi, did you install these floors in a bathroom. Curious of how they would hold up? Thank you!
sarah jane says
We didn’t install these floors in our bathrooms, I’m sorry!
MaClay says
Literally have been through so many laminate wood colors the past two weeks and couldn’t find anything we liked. I was looking for the rustic country home feel, but everything seemed to have a grey undertone. I’m so glad I stumbled across your blog! We have now found the flooring for our farmhouse being built thanks to you! Can’t wait to see it completed!!
sarah jane says
Aww yay! I’m so glad the blog post was helpful!! Best of luck with the new farmhouse 🙂
Alma says
Hi Sarah,
Love your floors. Did you also install Pergo on your stairs? If so, how are they holding up and do you have any pictures you could share?
sarah jane says
Thank you! We have carpet on our stairs
Morgan Smith says
Sarah, thank you so much for sharing! Your home is absolutely beautiful. My husband and I just bought our first home so my mind is going 110 mph, as you can imagine — endless possibilities! This flooring looks amazing and I am also wondering, where did you purchase your sink and faucet?
sarah jane says
There are so many decisions, that’s for sure! Here are a few blog posts that share details on our sink & faucet choices 🙂

Was the “recommended” Subflooring the Pergo gold premium underlayment? That’s what our Lowe’s recommended. But I think the underlayment is so important I want to make sure.
sarah jane says
Yes, that’s what we used!
Pamela says
We bought our first home 2 years ago. It was built in the late 70 and is a fixer upper, so we’ve basically been gutting one room after the next. Flooring was initially a year or so down the road but after seeing your floors, it’s one of the next project on the list and I’m so excited!! Your floors look amazing and seem extremely durable which will be perfect for my 11 month old & baby number two about to join us!
Thanks for sharing!!!
sarah jane says
You are so welcome! I hope you love them as much as we do 🙂
Nancee says
Love your floors! I have had a sample of this same flooring but I didn’t know if it would be too much of the similar color since we have the honey oak trim, fireplace and kitchen cabinets. What are your thoughts on this?
sarah jane says
I think that would look nice!
Allison says
Sarah thank you for sharing this post. I’m torn with choosing a floor color! Do you find that these floors to have a reddish/orange undertone? They look great in your home I’m also looking at the Shaw Shaw Pantheon HD Plus- Orso which is a darker color.
sarah jane says
You’re welcome 🙂 They have a warm undertone for sure! I do not feel that they look too “orange” in our home
Alise says
It’s now been 3 years… what’s your take on the flooring now?!!
sarah jane says
Still love it! No regrets 🙂
Alise says
Thank you!!! I have had so many people try and talk me out of this flooring… they say to go with an LVP instead of the Laminate… I am literally relying on all the awesome reviews and and sticking to it! Do you think that an LVP would be better than the Laminate or how does this compare to an LVP style? Thanks so much ♥️
Cadie says
Does this pull more brown colors or grey. I love the color, but am doing a repose grey throughout my house and wondering if the colors will match. Thanks for your help!
sarah jane says
I would say more brown than gray. Hope this helps with your decision!

Love love love your floors! We are building a new house and are looking for flooring. We put laminate in our last home and our pet had an accident. Sadly the floor buckled. I know this says waterproof but the staff at Lowe’s told me it was not 100% waterproof. Could you share if your dog has ever had an accident and if the floors actually do seem to be 100% waterproof? This is the floor I am wanting but scared to jump. Thanks so much!
sarah jane says
Hi there! We have a dog & toddler that have frequent spills. We have not had any issues with damage to the floors due to water. Can’t recommend this flooring enough
Lauren says
I love your floors – I have a pup too and I think they would be great with him. Thanks for sharing!
sarah jane says
You’re welcome – I’m happy this post helped!

Hi! I was wondering where your armoire is from in the hallway by the front door? Thanks!
sarah jane says
I found it at an antique shop!
Glenda says
Do you know if Pergo Portfolio rustic amber chestnut is the same as your floor?
sarah jane says
I beleive it is slightly different but the updated version of ours
Hillary says
I am not a fan of transitions and I don’t notice any in your photos, however I was told today that Pergo laminate floors have to have transitions. Your house and floors are gorgeous, but may need to look at alternative flooring if transitions are required.
sarah jane says
We used flat transitions for in between our pergo & tiled bathrooms. They were installed after these photos were taken. I understand it’s not for everyone!
Beth Faz says
Do you notice your dog slipping a-lot on this floor? Also do you feel this floor is more brown or does it have red or orange undertones to it?
sarah jane says
my dog doesn’t slip on this floor it has slight texture too it so it’s not “slick” feeling. the flooring is brown with warm undertones!
